Cone-beam CT better for detecting vertical root fractures in teeth
High-resolution cone-beam CT images are better at detecting vertical root fractures in teeth than are intraoral charge-coupled device (CCD) images, according to a study in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and Endodontics. In this study, conducted by researchers from Ankara University in Turkey, images from cone-beam CT units (the NewTom 3G (small FOV) and the Iluma (ultra/low resolution)) provided better diagnostic accuracy than low-resolution Iluma and CCD images. As imaging research progresses, researchers will refine methods of detection, which can allow tooth fractures to be treated earlier.
